7 July 2024: we've changed this site.
Originally based on our printed Directory, it was set up for desktops, before phones were widely used for internet !
Weebly (1) stopped updating some years ago, and (2) have announced "we will maintain support through at least July 2025".
Obviously, we can't take the chance that it's unsupported.
Having looked at other hosts, we find Webmate (who are already our email hosts) to be the easiest web set-up for web amateurs like ourselves!
Plus their response time is excellent, and you can ring the team based in Bodmin, Cornwall.
As we prepare to move, we're changing layouts on this site -- changes must be live, so may be some temporary duplication on a page, typically in mornings (UK time).
There is however one major problem. Weblinks are lost when copying over to WebMate. We can't manually relink 100s (?1000) of weblinks, it would take forever.
We successfully moved our Folklife West site, www.folklife.uk to WebMate, as not that many links to update.
But for this Directory, we can't manually relink 100s (?1000) of weblinks, it would take forever.
While we would prefer an all-singing, all-dancing, datebase with weblinks, we don't have the web knowledge, nor the time to do this.
Since we operate at a loss, we can't pay someone else to undertake this massive amount of work.
Therefore, back to the future (or perhaps forward to the past): print-based !
So we are going to base the online version on a print-based version of the Directory.
How this will work: we will have online copies of print pages, plus free downloads of each webpage as PDFs - being PDFs, links will be live.
Here is how a page might look
" Download [example is:] Music & Song: Groups webpage [example is just 1 of the 4 print pages] as a PDF:
Originally based on our printed Directory, it was set up for desktops, before phones were widely used for internet !
- New format, including to make pages more phone-friendly:
- Where possible, information other than actual listing moved to "Get Listed !" and ‘UPDATES' webpages
- 1st-line format - shorter, by moving contact name & phone to other contacts line.
- Simpler background for listings - colour simplified to just 1 colour per area etc, no border, etc; no large-type-size in boxes.
- Also, we're updating links to www.folklife.uk - new site doesn't use .html, so eg folklife.uk/info.html must change to folklife.uk/info
